PALZ is the newest of the groups providing services to the Eurobodalla community.

The local group was started in 2019. It provides six meetings a year for Professionals with  the onset of Alzheimer's, and their carers. While this is our brief, we do welcome anyone who would like to join us for the morning on the second Tuesday each second month to hear a stimulating speaker, to discuss and debate issues and to meet other people.

The group hears from the speaker and discusses and debates what has been delivered over morning tea. Recently the group has stayed in the Boardroom at Eurobodalla Meals on Wheels for a two course lunch and to continue the conversations.

This month the group heard from Pam and Jeff Thorpe on establishing and running a Bed and Breakfast Hotel in Tasmania. This brought back memories of times spent in B&Bs by everyone present and allowed for the reliving of  tales and adventures.

This very interesting talk followed others which have included discussing

  • the colouring in medications,
  • chocolate and its benefits,
  • being a member of the Australia parliament,
  • travels through Russia,
  • climate change and how our consumerism doesnt help,
  • bee keeping,
  • how we handled the bushfires,
  • the work of Meals on Wheels, and this month
  • the establishment and tales from a B & B business.

The group next meets on Tuesday 1 June, at 10am, at Eurobodalla Meals on Wheels office in Moruya and all are welcome.

PALZ was started in Geelong, Victoria and now has Chapters throughout the world. All have the same aim which is to allow for conversation and discussion so to stimulate social interactions and language processes.

Easter has arrived and so have easter eggs from Woolworths Moruya!

All clients and volunteers involved during Easter week will receive an egg. These will be distributed with their Easter meals delivery, when receiving individual social support or when at our Out and About (Group Social Support) events.

Our gift has been made possible due to the generosity of Woolworths Moruya where the Manager Daniel Robertson kindly agreed to provide 200 eggs for distribution. For this gift we are most grateful.

These festive occasions are special at Eurobodalla Meals on Wheels. At Christmas and Easter we find ways to bring a little joy into the lives of our clients as many of them can be alone during these breaks.

Our sincere thanks to Daniel and Woolworths Moruya.

The Board has started the process of developing the new Strategic Plan.

This was put on hold for 12 months as the outcome of the Aged Care Royal Commission was unkown and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 created a new environment.

But now we have the findings of the Royal Commission and are understanding the pandemic more.

The Board has developed a Timeline which allows debate on a range of matters through a Workshop setting after each monthly Board meeting.

The Board will also consult with clients and volunteers during the process of developing a Plan which will see the direction for the future set.

To date the Board has confirmed the Purpose of the Cooperative as:

Eurobodalla Meals on Wheels helps make our community stronger by providing services that contribute to the health, wellbeing and independence of people.

With this firmly established the Board now moves to how this will be undertaken by the paid and unpaid workers, the clients and the Board itself.

This is an exciting time for any organisation as it looks at what it is providing and highlights how the Purpose is to be achieved.

It does not seem long ago when Christmas was last here.

We all remember it so well for the smoke and fires which were burning around us. We can only hope that this year we are able to enjoy a peaceful Christmas with family and friends.

We then look forward to the joyous farewell of 2020 for it has been a year we shall remember well for all the wrong reasons. Our welcome to 2021 will be loud and exciting I am sure.

We have completed our preparations and once again our Christmas Card project was completed by primary school children. This year the students at Batemans Bay Public School produced 170 lovely cards. We thank the students and staff for their outstanding efforts.

Our excited clients have already enjoyed receiving the cards with their annual gift.

One client received a card from Evie.
She was so thrilled about this that she rang to tell us about it. Evie turns out to be this clients Great Grand-daughter.
The amazing thing was the childrens cards were placed into enveoples, these were randomly done by a volunteer; the envelopes were picked out when required and the clients names placed upon them; and through all this mixing and shuffling, Evies card arrived with her Great Grandmother!

Another client sent her card back to the school with a thank you note to the young artist recongising the hard work and effort that had gone into the card.

Small things like this bring home the special nature of Christmas for us all. The joy of family as well as the excitement that strangers can give to us through simple acts of kindness are always special.

Our Christmas menu is being well received and follows along tradtional lines.

There are a number of important dates to be noted:

  • The last meal delivery runs start on Thursday 17th December.
  • Our last delivery will be on Wednesday 23rd December.
  • Our office will close at mid day on 23rd December.
  • Our first meal delivery will start on 5th January.
  • Our office will be open for the mornings from Monday 4th January.
  • The office will open for the normal hours from Monday 11th January.
  • Group Social Support known as Out and About will start on Monday 11th Januray.
  • Individual Social Support will continue in various forms from January 4th.

Eurobodalla Meals on Wheels has tried very hard this year to support and care for all clients, and our wonderful volunteers.

The Board and staff wish everyone a wonderful Christmas. We look forward to working with everyone in 2021 towards a year of great support, welcomed friendship and real concern for each other.
