Our History

Meals on Wheels originated in Britain during the Second World War assisting frail older people who wanted to stay in their homes but who needed help to do so. Here in Australia, Meals on Wheels started in 1952 in South Melbourne when Mrs E Petty delivered home cooked meals on her tricycle to a few of her neighbours in need. In March 1957, Sydney City Council started Meals on Wheels in New South Wales, in the first week 150 meals were cooked in the Town Hall for inner city dwellers.

In the Eurobodalla, Meals on Wheels got going in the 1970’s. Regrettably our local history is a bit scratchy, but we think Meals on Wheels was started by a service club in Batemans Bay and Moruya, while in Narooma, four ladies cooked meals in their homes for neighbours in need.

Come the mid-90’s, the Eurobodalla Cooperative was formed through the amalgamation of the various services across the Eurobodalla. The need is still there in our local community, we remain strong with over 200 volunteers assisting with our mission each month.

Volunteers

Volunteers are a valued part of our local team, providing a simple service to our clients but one that carries so many rewards for all involved. The people we help come from a diverse range of backgrounds, they are often frail older people, younger people with disabilities, or their carers. These people need and value our service and the time and energy of the volunteers who make it a success.

Your time with Meals on Wheels Eurobodalla will be stimulating and rewarding, you will be kept informed and up to date, and we will give you as much support as you want. We currently need around 200 volunteers a month throughout the Eurobodalla, each person works for around three hours once a month on a roster system. Working in small teams, most volunteers are on the road delivering meals or assisting with activities though our Out and About program.

Rich work that comes with training and guidance. Working on our front line, ideas from volunteers often help improve our service and care. We conduct regular volunteer forums in Batemans Bay, Moruya, and Narooma and encourage you to come along and share your insights and experiences and meet other volunteers.

Each year a social ‘thank you’ event is held for our volunteers, an enjoyable day where service is recognised and stories shared. While performing a valuable role in the lives of those we help, we find that volunteers themselves also benefit. Being busy, bringing joy, mixing with people, contributing to something bigger than yourself can and does add vitality to life.
